Greetings, viBrant family!
2016 has been an incredibly exciting year so far for viBe programs! viBe SongMakers' latest supergroup Wave16 released their incredible record Lyracists available here on Bandcamp, and performed the album in its entirety at JACK Space. There were also phenomenal performances viBe alumni Aissatu Young and Twisted Talent. We cannot thank the backing band featuring Jeff Tobias, Briana Barber and Jessie Nelson enough for their guidance and support. It was an incredible 6 months of of intense work and it showed! There were so many other wonderful performances this year with Generation Now, viBe Solos "States of Being", Hofstra University, the Wave 16 Record Release, and a special performance and workshop with Professor Andrew Gaines' NYU's Drama in Education class.
The viBe Leadership Institute was launched in December 2015, with 6 alumnae; Nicosie Christophe, Jessica Exilus, Alize George, London Grant, Monique Letamendi, and Ayodele Temple. These determined and gifted women spent 7 months in intense leadership workshops and seminars, training them to lead viBe programs and for careers in the arts. On June 25th, we celebrated these incredible women and viBe alumni London Grant (St. John's University '16) and Aissatu Young (SUNY Purchase '16) on their achievements at a special graduation ceremony and reception at HERE Arts Center.
In January 2016, I was accepted into the Emc Arts’ ALACI (Arts Leaders as Cultural Innovators) Fellowship Cohort 2! This second cohort is focused on leaders of color in New York City. I am thrilled to joined such esteemed colleagues and look forward to working with them over the next 18 months to address a complex issue critical to viBe’s growth and development. I continue to meet with viBe alumn Ayodele Temple, Amirtha Kidambi; Program Manager with viBe and artistic advisors from peer organizations in a special ALACI working group.
On June 13th, I accompanied viBeSongMakers Program Director Alley Olivier and viBe Leadership Institute graduate Nicosie Christophe, on a trip Washington, D.C. to accept viBe's "Accelerating Change" Award from the Center for the Study of Social Policy, and attend the "United State of Women" Summit on June 14th and 15th. We saw powerful speakers including the Obamas, Sarah Jones and Marley Dias, founder of #1000BlackGirlsBooks.
viBe programming continues to make waves this Summer 2016 with viBe Stages. Our Summer viBeStages program runs from July 5-August 17th, and is off to a great start! viBeStages is a collaborative performance experience in which 6-12 girls work with professional theater directors to write and perform an original show. Program Director Gina Grandi and Program Assistant (and viBe Leadership Institute graduate) Ayodele Temple are working with 12 girls this year, with rehearsals occurring three days a week. The girls will work with viBe teaching artists, go on field trips, and create an original play. They will present their show on August 16th and 17th, at HERE Arts Center, so save the dates!
Please also save-the-date for our wonderful annual viBenefit on October 18th!
With permission, all Members, VIP Members, and underwriters will be recognized in viBe’s annual report.
